  • History and chronology of the BMLFUW

With the liberation of farmers in 1848 the personal vassal relationship was abolished.  Farmers had gained unrestricted ownership of their land. • Establishment of the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Arable Farming

The understanding that farmers and their families should not be left on their own in this situation was one of the crucial reasons for the decision to establish an Imperial and Royal Ministry of Agriculture at the turn to the year 1868. Since the latter was entrusted with the “supreme direction of the various branches of land improvement”, in particular with the affairs of agriculture, forestry and water management, Austria has had a central agency which deals with agricultural and forestry concerns at government level and which – now more than ever before – secures future-oriented, environmentally benign agriculture a due place both in Austria and Europe.

  • Accession to the EU

Eventually, Austria’s accession to the European Union at the beginning of 1995 brought about a fundamentally new agricultural system. Similar to the upheavals and revolutions of the preceding decades, farmers mastered also this great change with optimism and confidence. > more about: Accession to the EU
